PHEN to unveil full survey findings at its 22nd Annual African American Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit on September 9th
(Quincy, MA) August 26, 2026 — Preliminary findings from a new Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN) survey, point to both encouraging engagement and persistent gaps in prostate cancer awareness among Black men.
The survey of 168 respondents found that Black men are highly receptive to learning about their prostate cancer risk and taking action.
- Among respondents, 91% said they would be willing to receive a PSA test, and 93% said the information presented increased their interest in being tested.
However, the survey also revealed these alarming findings:
- 48% of respondents between the ages of 40 and 80 had never received a PSA test, while for this same age group 25% had not had a PSA test in 4 to 6 years.
PHEN will unveil the complete survey findings during Session I of the 22nd Annual African American Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit on September 9, 2026. During the session, PHEN will also issue its inaugural State of Black Prostate Cancer Report Card, evaluating the nation’s progress in addressing the Black prostate cancer crisis and identifying priorities for action in the years ahead.
“These early findings show that Black men are ready to take an active role in protecting their prostate health,” said Thomas Farrington, President and founder, PHEN. “The challenge—and the opportunity—is making sure men have the timely, trusted information they need to understand their risk, speak with their healthcare providers and make informed decisions about early detection.”
The survey also examined responses by age and geography, including participants from Boston and Rhode Island and from Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. These comparisons offer further insight into where awareness is growing and where targeted education and outreach may have the greatest impact.
PHEN will release and discuss the complete survey findings—including age at its 22nd Annual African American Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit, on September 9, 2026, during the opening session, “The State of the Black Prostate Cancer Annual Address,” given by its president and founder, Thomas Farrington, a 26-year prostate cancer survivor.

PHEN’s Black Men Prostate Cancer Awareness Survey included 168 respondents and explored perceptions of prostate cancer risk, awareness of PSA testing and early detection, personal and family experiences with the disease, and willingness to undergo screening. The findings describe the surveyed participants and should not be interpreted as nationally representative.
