"I am requesting that you take action and opposition to the U. S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation against the use of the PSA test for early detection of prostate cancer. Increased death and suffering by African American men, and all other men at high risk for prostate cancer could result from the implementation of the recommendation. With a death rate already at a crisis level of 140% higher than that for any other racial or ethnic group, it would be unethical to subject African American men to the risk of an even higher death rate. Any recommendation by the USPSTF on the PSA test should take this into consideration and make specific provisions that would guard against the risk for increased death by the men at high risk for prostate cancer.
