PHEN LAUNCHES NATIONAL RALLY AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER SEPTEMBER 8th IN BOSTON
"Heightened prostate health awareness and some basic knowledge can save thousands of lives across Black America, this is a goal of the PHEN rally against prostate cancer" - Thomas Farrington, PHEN president.
In a prelude to its 3rd annual African American Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit, PHEN launches a ?Rally Against Prostate Cancer.? The rally will take place via the media and on the ground.
THE RALLY OBJECTIVES ARE TO:
** Increase the awareness and understanding of Prostate Cancer as a crisis of epidemic proportions in Black America.
** Make men aware that early detection is the key to beating the disease and to educate them on Prostate Health 101.
** Rally leaders to take action in support of strategies and resources to eliminate the epidemic.
** Rally survivors to get involved helping with outreach to other men.
** Build a broad and active advocacy base.
** Increase support for education and awareness initiatives.
In the United States cancer is the second most common cause of death, accounting for 1 out of every 4 deaths. Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer among men with 230,000 men expected to be diagnosed in 2007 and approximately 30,000 deaths. African American men are diagnosed with the disease at a rate 60% higher than men of any other racial or ethnic group and die at an unbelievably 140% higher rate; a health crisis of epidemic proportions. Prostate cancer among African American men represents the largest racial disparity for any type of cancer afflicting men or women; however, prostate cancer is curable with early detection.
PHEN was founded in 2003 with a mission to work towards eliminating the African American prostate cancer disparity through increased education and awareness initiatives that will lead to early detection and more widespread support for the men at highest risk. The annual ?African American Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit? hosted by PHEN in Washington, DC on Capitol Hill is a major initiative recognized nationally as the leading event addressing the disparity. The summit is held in September during ?Prostate cancer awareness month.?
PHEN RALLY AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER
Working through the media (radio, internet, television and print) and with the support of the National African American RV Association (NAARVA), PHEN will launch a ?Rally Against Prostate Cancer? during the month of September 2007. The media component of the rally will outreach to communities with key awareness messages. Members of the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus have recorded awareness messages for their constituents that will be played on the radio and available on the internet.
